Walter Gotschke: 1951 winter impression

The 1951 January issue of ‘Das Auto’ shows the beautiful impression of a Mercedes 170S driving up a snowy mountain road, illustrated by Walter Gotschke.
Like in many of his drawings and paintings, he tells a little story. Here obviously some people are heading for winter sports. Skis and gear are fixed to the roof of the car and the wheels dig their tracks into the freshly fallen and powdery snow.
Walter Gotschke is the master in creating atmospheric illustrations, with gouache on card or paper, very expressive and loose. As everything but the Mercedes logo and few parts of the car are painted with lavish brush strokes the artist creates a sense of speed and dynamics. Gotschke not only captures a car on a snowy mountain road, he also expresses the feeling of freedom and excitement.
